Things to Do in Downtown Nashville
If you’re looking for unique and fun things to do in downtown Nashville, you’re in the right place. Many people are aware of the popular tourist spots in the city, but there are plenty of hidden gems worth exploring for an unforgettable experience in Music City. Here’s our insider’s guide on what to do in Nashville.
If You Like Live Music…
It’s called “Music City” for a reason. Live music is everywhere you turn: at sporting events, at brunch, even at the airport. This city is made for music lovers.
Catch a Live Show at the World-Famous Ryman Auditorium

There’s nothing like seeing a concert at Ryman Auditorium. The Ryman is a bucket list venue for performers and fans alike, with music lovers traveling from around the world to catch a show. For the full experience, book a guided backstage tour of the Ryman on the same day you attend a concert. Stand on the iconic stage, explore the backstage dressing rooms, and hear the secrets of Ryman’s past, then watch it all come to life during a live performance.
Bonus Idea: After the show, retrace the steps of your favorite performers by walking to Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge for a drink. This walk through the Ryman alley is a tradition stemming from the early days of the Opry’s run at the Ryman. Willie Nelson even mentions these “17 steps” in one of his songs. Look carefully and you’ll see the footsteps of this journey immortalized on the alley’s pavement.
Visit the Home of Country Music, the Grand Ole Opry
The Grand Ole Opry is “the show that made country music famous”–a 2-hour live performance where 7 or more artists share the stage and celebrate country’s past, present, and future. See a show or tour the Opry House, the Grand Ole Opry’s home since 1974. Check out unique artist spaces, like the backstage post office where all active Opry members (from Dolly Parton to Darius Rucker to Luke Combs) receive fan mail. To mail your favorite member a letter, send it to them care of the Grand Ole Opry at 2804 Opryland Drive, Nashville, TN 37214.
Hit Up a Honky-Tonk
Downtown Nashville is perhaps best known for Broadway, a vibrant entertainment district with bars playing country music. Many of the honky-tonks are associated with country music stars, like Luke Combs, Eric Church, Miranda Lambert, and more. For the best live music, check out Ole Red, Blake Shelton’s honky-tonk located on the corner of Broadway and 3rd Ave. Instead of tucking the acts away in the corner, Ole Red built a massive main stage that has seen an impressive roster of top talent. Contestants from The Voice and Opry rising stars have gotten their start at Ole Red. Superstars like Lainey Wilson, Post Malone, Jon Pardi, and more have performed there. And of course, Blake Shelton himself has been known to pop in.
If You Like History…
Nashville offers many museums and historical sites that capture the city’s rich and storied past. Here are some ways to experience Nashville’s history.
Tour Ryman Auditorium

Ryman Auditorium is more than a concert venue; it’s an active museum. Offering self-guided and backstage tours, visitors can learn about the Ryman’s more than 130-year past, its decades as the home of the Grand Ole Opry, and its role in turning Nashville into Music City. Plus, the museum is full of fun photos and memorabilia from the Ryman’s most well-known performers. Locals recommend you tour the Hatch Show Print Gallery on the building’s second floor. It displays Hatch’s custom, hand-designed concert posters from decades past.
Visit the Tennessee State Museum
Featuring three floors of art and historical artifacts, the Tennessee State Museum is a favorite stop for history buffs. Visitors can see objects left behind from the state’s first peoples and reproductions of a pioneer cabin and parlor. For an experience the whole family will enjoy, check out the Children’s Gallery, a colorful space where kids aged 3-8 can explore, play, and learn about history in an interactive way.
